Conor McGregor Says Fight vs. Floyd Mayweather Is Happening

Conor McGregor proved his stand-alone value on Saturday night, January 29, selling out Manchester, England's EventCity for an hour long Q&A that was broadcast as a Pay-Per-View event. And while he spoke extensively on his rise to become the biggest name in mixed martial arts, there was no topic he relished in delving into more than the question of whether he is for real about making a transition to the boxing world. "I have my eyes on one thing and that's Floyd Mayweather," McGregor told the cheering crowd, before settling speculation that the Mayweather vs. McGregor banter is simply a ploy he's been using to promote himself.

"I'll go to Vegas, I'll handle the commission or we'll figure the situation out, and then we'll come to a dotted line and then we'll go. But this is happening," McGregor said. His confirmation came in response to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani's assertion that a Floyd vs. Conor affair never occurred to him as anything more than a possibility the Irish champ was merely exploring. Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor is an event that is well beyond the exploration phase, McGregor said. In fact, he claims that it's been in the works for a while. "It's the fight to make. It's the fight that people want. It's the fight I want," he said. "A guy said to me 'why conquer one world when you could conquer two?' So I'm going to conquer two worlds."

A big obstacle that stands in the way of McGregor actually making the fight is his contract with the UFC, which analysts from both sides point to as a factor that will prevent it from ever taking place. Helwani posed the challenge to Conor, asking whether he believes he is capable of representing himself without the blessing of the MMA enterprise. He quickly cited the "Ali Act" to imply that it would be possible, but says that in business terms, he'd rather see all parties benefit from such a spectacular event, implying that he looks to continue negotiations with Dana White by his side.
