Watch Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae & Maxwell Perform at Women's March on Washington
Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae and Maxwell were among the numerous musical artists to show their support during the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. on Saturday (Jan. 21).
Keys stepped on stage and recited Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise” before performing her hit “Girl on Fire.” She also offered some encouraging words to protesters. "We want the best for all Americans -- no hate, no bigotry, no Muslim registry," the singer said.
Monae, who stars in the new critically acclaimed film Hidden Fences, also said a few words before performing her song “Hell You Talmbout.”
“Get off our areolas, get off our vaginas,” said Monae, who wore a “Fem the Future” sweatshirt. “It was a woman who gave us Martin Luther King. It was a woman who gave us Malcolm X. It was a woman who gave us Jesus.”
Later, Maxwell made an appearance at the march to deliver a beautiful cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.”
