The coin, commemorating the 225th anniversary of the Mint’s production, will be released in April.

U.S. Coin

The United States Mint is releasing a new gold coin, with a $100 value, to commemorate the Mint's 225 years of production. For the first time ever, Lady Liberty will be portrayed as a black woman on the coin.

The coin will be part of an ongoing commemorative series that will be released every two years, with future coins to depict Lady Liberty as Asian, Hispanic, and Indian. The Mint said in a statement that the series was being put forward “to reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States,” the Mint said in a statement."

The new Lady Liberty coin will be available for purchase on April 6. It will weigh about an ounce and be 24-karat gold. The Mint will be producing 100,000 of the coins and they will likely sell for far above face value, as the price of gold currently sits around $1,000 an ounce.
