It has been one week since Ronda Rousey's career in mixed martial arts was all but put to rest with a 48-second knockout at the hands of Brazilian phenom Amanda Nunes. Since the December 30th demolishing there has been great debate as to whether Rousey's story is that of a great champ who came unraveled by the lack of focus that comes with fame, or if it's one of a champ who was never as great as she was boosted to be. Boxing great Laila Ali believes it can only go down hill for UFC's former bantamweight champ, now that there is a chink in her armor that was exposed and will continue to be exposed.
"It's always sad to see someone who was way up here, get knocked all the way down to the bottom," Ali said during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show on Friday, January 6. "It was a big let down, especially when you find out somebody can't take a punch in this sport, you've got to be able to do that."
Ali, who retired with an unblemished 24-0-0 record in 2007 reminisced on her name being brought in comparison to Rousey, who now stands at 10-2-0, while she was on her rise in the sport. She put it out there that she no longer hears demands for her to come out of retirement to fight the declining UFC star, but has actually been approached to work with her. Ali didn't waste the opportunity to take one last poke at Rousey, saying "you can't train somebody's chin to take a punch," before inferring that it is unlikely that she'd work another fighter's corner. But she doesn't leave it out of question, stating, "For the right amount of money we could probably make it happen. It would be interesting to see 'Can Laila bring her back?' I don't know, we'll see."
